If you have been in the entrepreneurial space on Facebook for a while, you may remember Facebook Pages. They went on to be called Fan Pages, Business Pages and a few other coined terms too. However, these used to be a go-to. You could almost always have counted on them to generate leads in some capacity. Not anymore. Facebook Groups, mind you, are here even stronger.
You see, Facebook decided a few years ago that if you were a business – you should pay to play in the page’s space. So even if it pertained to a minimal ad budget, some monies would be spent to be seen.
And this is still very much the case.
Facebook Pages Vs. Facebook Groups
Facebook Pages: Like a friend’s profile, Facebook Pages enable public figures, businesses, organizations and other entities to create an authentic and public presence on Facebook. Unlike your profile, Facebook Pages are visible to everyone on the internet. You, and every person on Facebook, can connect with these Pages by becoming a fan. And then receive their updates in your News Feed and interact with them.
Facebook Groups: While Pages were designed to be the official profiles for entities, such as;
- brands or,
Facebook Groups are the place for small-group communication. Additionally, for people to share their common interests and express their opinion. Groups allow people to come together around a common cause, discuss issues, post photos and share related content.
In some ways somewhat similar; however, groups have almost an exclusive type of feeling to them. They think more communal and less public. Often people feel safer sharing thoughts, opinions and ideas in a more closed setting – where a Facebook Page can feel a lot more vulnerable.
Using Facebook Groups Effectively
Today, we want to discuss how to use existing Groups more effectively. There are ones you are members of – not an admin or moderator. We will revisit that content in the near future. So, let’s take a look at some best practices for using the Groups effectively and then we will recommend some of our recommendations.
Number One: Be a Regular Contributor
Once you have found Groups you enjoy spending time in — and in your niche — make a habit of visiting regularly. The best way to become an expert in those groups is to be available consistently. Your contribution may be celebrating someone else, making an excellent recommendation or helping someone solve a ‘problem.’
Show up often, and people will soon start reaching out to you.
Number Two: Share Dynamite Content
First and foremost – DO NOT spam your business or opportunity in Groups. If you come across Groups who support this type of activity – save your time and steer clear. Take some time to craft solid content that teaches the group members something.
You should include a great article you read or a helpful app you just learned about. Whatever the case is, don’t post to post – have something valuable to share.
Number Three: Offer your Support to other Members
Let’s assume you are in a group for parents. You have been sharing solid content around non-toxic living or all-natural diapers. Then, you come across a new mom who sounds like she’s struggling – over an ear (eye). Please note: only offer this if you have the time to spare. Additionally, make sure you show your help only to listen, not counsel.
This can be a grey area and tough to fulfill as you get busier – but being a kind human can also go a long way!
Number Four: Be a Good Human First
It’s true. Groups can be one of the best ways to gain leads and attract new potential prospects to your content. And when this happens, stay a human – please. There’s this fine line between casual and sales – avoid this at all costs.
Think about why people reached out or connected with you in the first place. Be that person. Stay humble, genuine and authentic to who you are as a person. This will help you continue to see others in the same light instead of a quick sale or commission cheque!
