Being a small business owner and/or entrepreneur will involve its ups and downs. Some of the lessons we’ve learned along the way, is managing emotions. It can be an emotional ride, right? Especially when you are dealing with other people. After all, we are in the relationship marketing space – relationships bring emotions.
However, there are right and wrong ways to work through those feelings, responses and reactions.
In this post, we want to share with you the Emotional Rules we have found work the most effectively.
Specifically, when speaking to people. Now, these people may be prospects or already those working with you.
Because let’s be honest just because someone has started working with or buying from you, the emotions can get become even more intense.
4 EMOTIONAL RULES TO FOLLOW FOR SUCCESS IN YOUR BUSINESS
We know you come across a ton of information online, from others, workshops and all things in between. So the content we are about to lay on ya is taken directly from our experiences in building our business.
Maybe you can relate to experiential teaching (or learning). For us, we know that we learn the best by doing – and teach the best by having done. We will keep these as relevant and ‘to the point’ because sometimes knowing the what and the how can be far more lucrative than the why.

RULE NUMBER ONE – DO NOT GET EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED TO THE OUTCOME
We’re going to bet you’ve heard this one before. And gosh, it’s so necessary to really grasp this. Listen, we get it. There’s nothing worse than spending your time on someone who choose not to buy from or do business with you. It can feel like you are doing and saying all the right things, answering all of their questions, and feeling like you’re right there.
And then suddenly …
It all stops and you hear the words ‘no’. Guess what? You are going to hear this word and you will survive it. What is important to note is that you have to pour into people the same way whether the answer is going to be a yes or a no. This is how you will build a solid foundation and grow a business of integrity.
Don’t take the perceived rejection as being personal – Because it’s not. With class, you thank them for all the time you spent together, could ask for referrals even. How you manage this sense of defeat will dictate your relationships moving forward.
RULE NUMBER TWO – ALWAYS BE YOUR BEST SELF
Only you know your best self. And it is OK to be emotional remember, but it’s how that is imposed on others that matters. So let’s look at a list of ways you can ‘find your best self’ which in turn, will help you stay on that emotional rollercoaster when all you want to do is hop off.
- Try new things; new, out of character experiences. Get outside that box and live the moments you’ve always wanted to but haven’t made time for. You will thank yourself for this.
- Pursue your dreams; whatever they are – start today taking steps in that direction.
- Keep your motivation levels high; personal development, being around the right people, etc.
- Zone in on your strengths; we always feel great when we do great!
- Practice self-care; do this like it’s not an option.
This list can not only help you find your best self, but be it too!
RULE NUMBER THREE – BRING IN THE PASSION
So the jury might be out on whether you can take a passion and turn it into a business (and we’ll save that for another day). Instead what we’re talking about here is find something you love about your business and be passionate about it.
If it’s people – go meet more people. Perhaps it’s the product … GREAT! spread the word! When you are passionate about something, especially the things you are talking about and/or showing others, your body language, tonality, persuasion or otherwise will shine through.
Good or bad.
So when you find that thing that makes you super excited, connected and really – happy, do that. And then do it again. Staying passionate in your business will absolutely help you grow and scale your business. And passion is meant to be emotional, right? Of course, it’s a powerful emotion. Knowing how to use it to your benefit is where the magic happens.
RULE NUMBER FOUR – MAINTAIN YOUR POSTURE
Does this mean we’re telling you to ‘stand up straight’? Well, it could mean that. But instead we are referencing more so the ability to expect versus hope. The right posture brings a sense of confidence to the scenario. When you are chatting with someone via computer or mobile phone (which we often do through messenger or text for example), your choice of words can also dictate a posture.
The moment we start to sound desperate or pushy our posture takes a hit.
People will pick up on that and either walk away or exploit it. A great way to check your emotional posture is to go back through some older messages you’ve had with prospects or even team members. If you were the receiver, would you feel confident is the sender?
Would it guide you into buying decision or would you instead feel sold? You might be surprised how telling those words on a screen can be when it comes to this.
FINAL NOTE ON THE EMOTIONAL RULES
Well, there you have it; Our 4 Emotional Rules when it comes to working with people in your business. On the surface they can seem almost ‘no-brainer’ or unnecessary even, but we promise when you nail these things – success is inevitable.
