Are you a network marketing professional or business owner who has wondered what emotional intelligence’s role is in business? Or, perhaps you’re wondering what it is — or why it matters? We believe it holds massive merit in the business world.

In today’s post, we briefly cover what emotional intelligence is, the topics we will touch on, and how you can apply it to your business.

Let’s get started.

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is recognizing and understanding emotions and their impact on behavior and attitudes. People with a high degree of emotional intelligence are in tune with both their feelings and the emotions of others with whom they come in contact.

Knowing this, let’s apply this thought process to your business.

Emotional intelligence involves being sensitive to and perceptive of other people’s emotions.

Remember, most of us are in the relationship business, right?…

Today’s workplace (workspace) is characterized by the following;

  1. open communication
  2. teamwork,
  3. mutual respect among colleagues, team members or otherwise.

When EI is involved, leaders can better understand and motivate the people they oversee, work with or work for.

If you want to succeed in the business world now and in the future, you must understand the role of emotional intelligence in business today.

Leaders who have outstanding leadership qualities tend to possess emotional intelligence.

Are you a leader? Of course, you are! So, take note.

It’s important to realize that leadership isn’t a given just because you find yourself in a position of authority. Instead, a leader is someone that others look up to. And this role is reserved for individuals with high standards of integrity and excellent communication skills.

An individual in tune with their own emotions is much more likely to understand and empathize with the feelings that impact others.

This is why emotional importance is so valuable for leaders.

It’s essential to want to remember that actions speak louder than words. But again, this is something that individuals who possess a high degree of emotional intelligence understand naturally.

Emotional intelligence will continue to become even more critical in the business world in the future than it is today.

The five most Common Components

Connelly Hayward, a master trainer in emotional intelligence, explained what the five components of emotional intelligence are:

  1. Self-awareness is the ability to recognize and understand your emotions and the effect those emotions have on you and others around you.
  2. Self-regulation is thinking before acting and suspending judgment about a situation, person or experience. With self-regulation, redirecting disruptive impulses is a must.
  3. Social awareness involves understanding the emotional state of those around you. In other words, it is the ability to sense the emotional temperature of a room. It also encompasses recognizing how your words and actions affect others.
  4.  Social regulation is the ability to influence the emotions of others. Social regulation involves knowing when it’s appropriate to influence the emotional condition of others and when it’s appropriate not to do so.
  5. Motivation is the passion you have for work that goes beyond money, recognition or promotion.
